The latest News from Salesian Mission works

Twenty-two Year 5 and 6 students recently gave up a day of eating to raise money for charities that are supported by the Justice Squad, a socially minded group of young leaders from St Gerard Majella primary school in Cairns. All students stopped eating for ten hours from 7:30 am till 5:30 pm, not an easy task for hungry, growing, young children!

India is a country of many contrasts – in development, living standards, culture, religion and race. According to the World Bank, half of the population are poor and with more than 20 per cent living in extreme poverty.

Our priorities at present are assisting school dropouts, providing education to poor children, offering scholarships, supporting orphans and street children and establishing “self-help groups” especially for women. Through community participation in villages many are becoming more aware of fair working rights.

Over 200 Children from shantytowns participated in five summer camps. The children were nourished, enjoyed group games and given an insight into fun holiday camps away from their poor neighbourhoods.
